Women and Families

When women are supported, our children, workplaces, and communities succeed. I will always advocate for a woman’s right to control her own body, make her own decisions about her own health care, and have equal rights and protection in the workplace. Here are my priorities:

Defend a woman’s right to choose. Roe v. Wade is legal precedent and we must fight back against any attempt to insert the government into a woman’s health care choices.

Ensure equal pay. It’s unconscionable that in the 21st century women are still paid less than men for every dollar, and we still haven’t even closed the gap between the amount men and women earn for the same job. This is even more extreme for women of color. I was very proud the day that the House voted to pass the Paycheck Fairness Act, because equal work deserves equal pay, and I was even prouder to cast my vote in support of that vital legislation. I’ll continue this fight until we achieve true pay parity for men and women.

Strengthen workplace protections for women. From the boardroom to the battlefield, and everywhere in between, women deserve equal representation and equal protection under the law. This includes clear policies and procedures that ensure no woman has to fear retribution for reporting harassment or question whether she works in a safe environment.

Parental leave. I support the FAMILY Act, which would guarantee at least 12 weeks of paid family and medical leave for every worker in America — which they could use to take care of a newborn or help a family member who has fallen ill. During the COVID-19 crisis, I’ve also worked to ensure that our health care and frontline workers get the paid leave they need to keep themselves and their families healthy and safe.
