The Morning Call: Barack Obama endorses five Pa. legislative candidates

Former President Barack Obama is supporting five Democratic candidates in Pennsylvania among 81 nationwide endorsements he announced Wednesday.

Democrat Susan Wild, who is running in the Lehigh Valley’s 7th Congressional District, is among the Pennsylvanians who Obama is backing.

Wild said in a statement that she was “thrilled and humbled” by the former president’s support.

“As he indicated in his endorsement, this campaign is about restoring opportunity and upholding the ideals of justice, fairness, responsibility, and the rule of law,” Wild said. “I’m honored that he recognizes my commitment to those virtues and my determination to fight for them every single day I’m in Congress.”

Another is Madeleine Dean, who is seeking to represent the heavily Democratic Montgomery County-based 4th District.

Dean described Obama as someone who “lifted others up” and “reached for a big-hearted, better America that worked for everybody.”

In a statement, Obama described the candidates he’s backing as “a wide and impressive array” who will “strengthen this country we love by restoring opportunity that’s broadly shared, repairing our alliances and standing in the world, and upholding our fundamental commitment to justice, fairness, responsibility, and the rule of law.”

Obama added that he expects to campaign in several states this fall, and to issue a second round of endorsements before the November election.
